Last Friday, agnès b. radio exclusively broadcast the new album by the British band.

This Friday marked the release of Dry Cleaning’s latest album, which agnès b. radio aired at 5 p.m. Formed in 2018, the band belongs to the avant-garde of rock, at the crossroads of punk, early-1980s American hardcore, stoner rock, and a playful no wave spirit. Florence Shaw’s vocals, calibrated to the sonic worlds of her three bandmates, place her in the lineage of spoken-word artists, from Laurie Anderson to Sue Tompkins.

The album took shape in rehearsal spaces in Peckham, south London. Florence, guitarist Tom Dowse, drummer Nick Buxton, and bassist Lewis Maynard all come from this part of the city and wrote, played, and exchanged ideas in the same room. With Dry Cleaning, music and lyrics form an inseparable and fertile whole. Secret Love evolved through enriching sessions at Loft Studio in Chicago, followed by explosive sessions in Dublin with Alan Duggan and Daniel Fox of Gilla Band—drawing on the sonic particularities of each place—and finally with Cate Le Bon in the Loire Valley. She compares listening to the album to a walk through a city; its eleven tracks could also be seen as individual images in a gallery.
