"A chronological "history" of photography in the Agnès collection" opens on December 8.

agnès b. has always had a special bond with photogaphy. Commenting on all the works she has brought together since 1984, she said in 2000: "If it's a collection, it's more like a free assembly than a thoughtful construction. I could even say that it's the photos themselves that have imposed themselves one by one, one calling on the other. Perhaps each photo, by its very quality, demanded another that was just as beautiful, just as moving or just as essential... »

In this exhibition, agnès b. presents a "chronological" display that begins with a dozen gelatino-silver bromide negative chronophotographic plates, albumin prints, negative papers, sepia photographs & silver back-type prints dating from the second half of the 19th century. Next, we see Agnès's attachment to black & white until the 80s, with the effervescence and finally the explosion of color photography in the 90s. But this chronological bias in no way precludes the free assembly that Agnès cherishes.

The list of artists on display is breathtaking: Jacques-Henri Lartigue, Man Ray, Willy Ronis, Brassaï, Walker Evans, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Berenice Abbott, Helen Levitt, Weegee, Seydou Keïta, Kenneth Anger, Malick Sidibé, André Kertész, Nan Goldin, Martin Parr, Ryan McGinley, William Eggleston, Jonas Mekas...
