Exhibition at the agnès b. London boutique, 14 October – 12 November
A floral tribute to Martin Parr
The exhibition at the agnès b. boutique in Marylebone, London, invites you to rediscover the unique vision of Martin Parr, a leading figure of contemporary photography. It now takes on a special meaning as a tribute to the artist, who recently passed away.
The bond between agnès b. and Martin Parr is one of long-standing loyalty: Galerie du Jour agnès b. was the very first gallery in France to exhibit and represent the British photographer’s work, playing a pioneering role in the recognition of his oeuvre.
Over the years, it devoted several landmark exhibitions to him that mark the course of his career:
- 1993: Bored Couples
- 1995: British Food
- 1998: Sleeping Japanese
- 1999: Common Sense
- 2000: Flowers
First shown at Galerie du Jour in 2000, the Flowers series reflects Parr’s keen eye for the trivial detail and the kitsch of everyday life, and it is in London that you can now discover it.
All the photographs on show belong to the agnès b. Collection, a testament to her enduring commitment to the artist.
Through images taken across the globe, from Thailand to Germany, by way of Ireland and the seaside resorts of Dorset, Martin Parr captures the flower in all its forms: natural, artificial, or decorative motif. Whether it’s flowers set beside a plate of butter in Cleethorpes or a flower-covered Ferrari in Knokke, these prints (often Cibachromes or colour prints mounted on aluminium) reveal the chromatic contrasts and tender irony so dear to the artist.
