Megaptera is the scientific name for the humpback whale; it is now also the title of Rone's new album.
In 2020, images of solitary sailors playing his music at sea appeared online. These images showed cetaceans (dolphins and whales) responding to his music when it was played in various parts of the world. The repetition of these events raised many questions for the composer: was it pure chance, or was there something in his music that resonated with these animals ?
Conceived during a naturalist expedition off the coast of Réunion Island, Megaptera was composed at sea, in close proximity to humpback whales. After studying their vocalizations and attempting to interpret them using his synthesizers and human voices, Rone envisioned music as an attempt to connect with what eludes us.
In fifteen tracks, the album recounts this adventure, the excitement, the doubts, but also the awakening it sparked. "Very quickly, the initial objective changed. It was no longer about whether my music could attract whales, but about learning to listen: to the whales, to the silence, to the presence."
